Mandala Festival @ VOCAS

The Mandala is a universal sacred circular pattern that is an abstract representation of our relationship with the universe. From May 25 to June 28, 2013, six artists from Singapore, the Philippines and India present a show of Mandala paintings, installations, dances, and music at the Victor Oteyza Community Art Space (VOCAS) in Baguio City.

To Regina Tuazon, mandalas are round, full and pregnant as the full moon, which she beholds as flawless example of a dynamic mandala. “We see the cycle of creation clearly before our eyes, month after month. From nothing it becomes full and wanes again. This cycle is a promise of a never-ending hope that there’s always rebirth in everything.” The moon and its journey through the twelve months of the year was this artist’s inspiration and, expanding her experience into multidimensional spaces, she composed a tune / wrote a story for each of her mandala paintings. Her show is a full moon offering and dedication to the Mother / Goddess / Universal Deity and Energy Within.

Lakan Olivares regards mandalas as both, a creative contemplation process as well as visual aids for meditation. In his latest series “Mandala Sum” (Latin for “I am the Mandala”), the artist shares his broad knowledge on sacred symbols and how they reflect our relationship with the divine.

Lakshmi Krishnan is a dancer trained in classical Indian dance. She is one of the senior teachers at the Singapore TEMPLE OF FINE ART (TFA), a school dedicated to spiritual art. Lakshmi will perform a one of a kind dance inside a flower mandala laid out by her guru Swami Shanthanand Saraswati and his spiritual partner Maa.

Chitra Poornima Sathish has studied Carnatic vocal music at TFA and renders a vocal version of the mandala during the opening of the show. On Sunday, she will offer a free workshop on spiritual music.

Subhashini Balasubramaniam from Singapore will contribute a mandala lamp.

Every Saturday, for the duration of the show, VOCAS offers mandala-coloring activities, a slideshow on mandalas from around the world, and films on sacred circles. All events are free of charge. For Info, call VOCAS 074 - 446 0108.
