This year’s” 8th Tanabata Festival” will focus on the Christian Daimyo Takayama Ukon, a Christian warlord who was exiled to Manila in1614 due to Edo Shogumate’s ban on Christianity. He was beatified by Pope Francis in January 2016 and was given the title of “Beatus” or “Blessed.” Ukon was born in 1552 and baptized in hischildhood and served as a warlord. The Baguio Tanabata is patterned after the biggest and most famous Sendai Tanabata Festival in the Miyagi Prefecture of Japan, inspired by the warrior Date Masamune.

The Sendai Tanabata Festival attracts 2 million tourists a year duringthe three-day festival in August. Visitors and communities come from differentparts of Japan to participate in various activitieslike parades, lantern and streamer decorations.
“Tanabata” means evening of the seventh. The celebrations in Japan happen during the 7th dayof the 7th month, which according to the Gregorian calendarfalls in August. Streets are decorated with bamboo installations consisting of small and big bamboos where one is able to hang their wishes and origami decorations. The hanging of wishes is inspired by the love story of Orihime (a weaving princess) and Hikoboshi ( a cow herder). Legend says that the lovers were separated by Tentei (the Sky King) across the milky way (Amanogawa) when they failed to meet their responsibilities aftermarriage.

Historical records show that Masamune Date (1567-1636) was one of the strongest daimyo feudal lord, in the Tohoku region andthe founder of the modern-day city of Sendai. During his period, three major unifiers of Japan were: Oda Nobunaga (1534 -1582),Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537 -1598) and Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543- 1616).

Hidenobu Oguni , President ofthe JANL is the overall coordinator of the Tanabata Festivals inBaguio, which started in 2010. In 2004,Annabella Teraoka Dacones and former Japanese Consul Carlos Teraoka started the“Matsuri” a the Japanese word for a festival or holiday, was
