Press Release : Baguio Tanabata Festival 2014

Press release :

BAGUIO CITY – The Baguio Tanabata Festival 2014 kicks off with dual themes “Your Whisper to Twinkling Stars” and “Baguio Tanabata Festival in Aobajo Castle”. This is the 5th year Tanabata Festival will be celebrated in Baguio sponsored by the Embassy of Japan, the Japan Foundation in Manila, the JICA Philippine Office, the Japanese Association in Northern Luzon, the Filipino-Japanese Foundation of Northern Luzon (Abong) and the National Correspondents Club of Baguio and the Baguio Museum Inc.

The two-month long event taking place in July and August will commemorate Philippines -Japan Friendship month in July and the Tanabata Festival in August with the support and cooperation of various organizations and schools in Baguio city like: the Baguio City National High School, the Otageki Cosplay Association, the FDCP Baguio Cinematheque, the Bag-iw Art Society, the UP Anime_HQ, the UP SVA, the UB Kawaii Kazoku, the Cordillera Green Network, the Benguet State University, the Saint Louis University, Baguio, the University of Baguio, the University of the Cordilleras and the University of the Philippines and the City of Baguio.

In 2012, Councilor Lourdes Tabanda authored City Ordinance No.66 institutionalizing July 23, as Filipino-Japanese Friendship Day together with the other activities highlighting the celebration of the Tabanata Festival. The designation of July 23 as the Philippine-Japan Friendship Day lauds the diplomatic relationship between the two countries.

This year’s Tanabata Festival is patterned after the biggest and most famous Sendai Tanabata Festival in the Miyagi Prefecture in Japan, inspired by the warrior Date Masamune. Sendai Tanabata Festival attracts 2 million tourists a year during the 3 day festival in the month of August – visitors come from all parts of Japan. Visitors and the communities participate in various activities like the parade, lantern and streamer decorations.

“It is my dream to attract more tourists to Baguio during the rainy season,” says Hidenobu Oguni, overall coordinator of the Tanabata Festival in Baguio since 2010 and President of the Japanese Association of Northern Luzon (JANL). “ I wish to see a parade of colorful umbrellas, Japanese decorations all over the City of Baguio and hope that the Tanabata Festival will become bigger and bigger every year.”
