MANIQUIS Holds 1st Solo Photography Exhibition
“Unscene” - Photographs by Ric Maniquis
The Gallery, SM City Baguio
June 20 to August 23, 2009

“Unscene,” an exhibition of photographs by Ric Maniquis opens on
Saturday, June 20, 2009, 5 p.m. at The Gallery, SM City Baguio. The
show will run until August 23, 2009.

In this first solo exhibition, Maniquis returns to art photography
after almost 20 years in commercial photography. While he has joined
group exhibitions in the 1980s, it was only in 2007 that he resumed
doing art photography. Aided by digital technology and the internet
(where he maintains the site www.ricmaniquis.multiply.com), he is able
to quickly share photographs and receive immediate feedback through
online viewers’ comments. This process became an important source of
encouragement for him and largely contributed to the rediscovery of
his old love for photography.

Maniquis, born and raised in Baguio, is a musician and a
photographer. As radio disc jockey from 1974 to 1978, he was “Jivin’
Ric:” he played the music of that generation. As a musician, he plays
the guitar and sings jazz, folk, rock, and rhythm and blues. In
professional photography, he shoots portraits, weddings, product
images, and corporate photographs. In art photography, he produces
images that are “quiet and personal.”

The artistic context in which he is able to express himself today is
defined by his technical proficiency, aesthetic skills honed by
self-learning, the breadth of 20 years’ experience in photography as a
profession, and the imprint of all the things that continue to inspire

He likens his photography to performing improvisational jazz. A fine
jazz musician creates spontaneously: he explores many different ideas
on every chord progression and in each key to play music that tells a
story. Similarly, in his photography, Ric purposely steps outside his
comfort zone to create something fresh and to explore uncommon ways of
seeing, finding subjects that tell a story -- occasionally revealing
beauty and hidden poetry in common everyday scenes or in unlikely

Ric Maniquis presents images not as a chronicle but as a visual diary
where the photographs also project the photographer.

The images in this solo exhibition were selected from photographs
taken around Baguio and Benguet between 2005 and 2009.
